As we head into the second half of Star Wars™: Unlimited’s third year, there is one facet of the Star Wars galaxy that has remained relatively unexplored within the game. We’ve seen epic space battles, legendary Force users, cutthroat galactic politics, and more blaster-toting, credit-chasing outlaws than you can count. What we haven’t seen that much are the vast multitude of alien worlds that make up a large part of the galaxy—as well as the myriad creatures that call them home.

Welcome to the official first look at Homeworlds, the exciting next set of Star Wars: Unlimited!

As implied by its name—and as we alluded to above—this set turns its focus onto the various planets of the Star Wars galaxy, with a heavy emphasis on alien creatures and the invading armies they defend against. With two new tokens and a new keyword that allows you to upgrade your base, Homeworlds is sure to shake up the game in all sorts of new and exciting ways!

We’ve got a lot to cover today, so without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s instore for Homeworlds!

As usual, we kick the set off with a pair of new Spotlight Deck leaders. In Homeworlds, our Spotlight Decks feature Chewbacca and Grand Moff Tarkin as leaders, each of them coming with 4 Special-rarity cards in their pre-built decks. Just like past Spotlight Decks, each of these decks includes several of the set’s new features while also being optimized to play to their respective leader’s strengths.

On the topic of strength, our first Spotlight Deck leader for Homeworlds is none other than Chewbacca! Arriving in the set as a Command and Heroism leader, Chewie has the handy ability to allow any friendly unit to attack even while exhausted. This has a wide range of applications, from making an immediate attack with a unit you just played to getting to use powerful On Attack abilities twice in one round. Chewie’s ability is especially useful for getting around the drawback of the powerful Hijacked AT-ST, which would otherwise be stuck in an exhausted state for a while after you play it.

Of course, Chewie’s ability can get expensive while he’s on his leader side, but thankfully the rest of his deck is built with that in mind. First up is Chewbacca’s Bowcaster, a useful weapon that can accelerate your resources when you attach it to Chewie himself. His deck is also full of low-cost Ewok units, who are not only cheap to play but also have synergies with each other. Take the Ewok Archers, for example, which gain Ambush while you control another unit that costs 3 or less (which nearly every Ewok unit does). Meanwhile, the Adamant Ewoks can deal some extra damage when played so long as you control another Ewok unit or an Endor base.

As an aside, abilities that refer to a specific base trait are something you’ll see a decent amount of in this set. Each primary aspect has four Common bases this time around, each with one of four specific traits: Tatooine, Naboo, Endor, and Kashyyyk. We’ll let you all speculate on what sort of cards you’ll find associated with each one!

To round out Chewbacca’s deck, we have some of his fellow Rebels. C-3PO bridges the gap between the Ewok units in Chewie’s deck and the Rebel ones, able to grant both unit types a decent stat boost while also being a low-cost unit that works alongside the rest of the deck’s strategy. Meanwhile, Ezra Bridger is a (slightly) more expensive unit that exemplifies one of Homeworlds’ new features: the Beast tokens! These token units are the largest we’ve seen in the game so far, with 3 power and 3 HP. Their stats make them quite formidable, but in exchange for their strength, they tend to be more difficult or costly to create than past token units. Still, having some massive rampaging beasts on your side can certainly help turn the tide of battle in your favor!

Looming across the battlefield from Chewbacca, the other Homeworlds Spotlight Deck features Grand Moff Tarkin as its leader—well, partially. This particular version of Tarkin is extremely unique in that the unit side is a completely different entity than the leader side! When you manage to build to a whopping 9 resources, you can deploy your leader, swapping Tarkin out for none other than the Death Star itself! As a leader unit that deploys into the space arena, the Death Star is a devastating force that can instantly defeat a base with 10 or less remaining HP. This puts a terrifying countdown on the duration of the game, because if your opponent can’t win fast enough, they’ll be helpless to stop the might of the legendary battle station!

Both Grand Moff Tarkin and the Death Star share another ability: they allow you to ignore the aspect penalties on any upgrade you play that has the new Fortify keyword. This keyword instructs you to attach the upgrade to your base instead of a unit, a Star Wars: Unlimited first. Tarkin’s playstyle revolves around building up as many fortifications on your base as you can to help you survive until that crucial 9-resource turn. Take advantage of Tarkin’s ability to let you play out-of-aspect Fortify upgrades like The Tarkin Doctrine and keep your opponent guessing on what your next move will be!

Most Fortify upgrades come with an ability that can disrupt your opponent’s momentum. The aforementioned Tarkin Doctrine can let you exhaust an enemy unit when you play a Fortification upgrade, which combos quite nicely with the Carbonite Chamber and its ability to prevent that unit from readying again. If you need multiple uses out of the Carbonite Chamber, use the ability on Vice Admiral Rampart to keep the upgrade around a little longer, and as long as your base is upgraded, Director Krennic can draw you extra cards, giving you even more tools to work with.

If you don’t have an upgrade on your base to trigger Krennic’s ability, you can call on a Remote Scout to help you search for one. If your opponent is building up a little too much momentum, you can use a Clone X Assassin to inflict a Weakness token on one of their units. This is the other new token type introduced in Homeworlds, functioning essentially as the inverse of the classic Experience token. Depending on how many of these tokens you build up on an enemy unit, you could severely hinder their damage output, or even just defeat them outright. Between the fortifications on your base and Weakness tokens reducing your opponent’s strength, they’ll be hard-pressed to claim victory before the Death Star enters the fray!

With over 260 new cards, Beast tokens, Weakness tokens, and the Fortify keyword, Homeworlds is here to add all sorts of new strategic elements to the table as we approach the end of Star Wars: Unlimited’s third year. Stay tuned for more news, previews, card spoilers, and gameplay as we look forward to the set’s release in October!
